Brewster, located in Barnstable County within the state of Massachusetts, is part of the famous Cape Cod. Part of the Lower Cape, Brewster is a town that captures much of Cape Cod's beauty and essence. From its beautiful coastline to being the home of the cape's largest state forest, Roland C. Nickerson State Forest Park, the city offers a fantastic alternative to the cape's busier areas.
When you stay at any one of the wonderful city hotels Brewster and Cape Cod offers, you will come alive in a way you wouldn't have, going anywhere else. The town was first a parish of another town before it became its own town during the early 1800s. It was named as an honor to Elder William Brewster, a colonist Pilgrim leader from England, who was part of the first Pilgrim group to come to North America on the Mayflower in 1620. From that point on, the town continued a steady growth. This was due in a large way to Stony Brook, the area where the country's first water-powered woolen mill and grist was founded. In addition to this, many wealthy sea captains lived in the town and built wonderful stately homes and mansions for themselves and their families, which can still be seen throughout the town today.
The Crosby Mansion is a good example of one of Cape Cod's old mansions. This beautiful Victorian mansion is a sight to see. Not only does it give you great insight into old Cape Cod, it is also jaw dropping with its grand yellow physique. The three-story, 35-room mansion overlooking the bay was built in resemblance to the Gold Coast mansions in Chicago. It has more than ten imported tile fireplaces, a French style salon and marble sinks in addition to marble floors. The beauty of the mansion is not only in its opulence but also in its simplicity. Within the mansion is a modest cottage the mansion was built around because Albert Crosby, the original owner, did not want to tear it down. Many times throughout the course of his stay he would retreat to the simplicity of the cottage to escape the extravagances in his life. The mansion is a great place to visit and tours are available and recommended since you can get the entire account of the intriguing story that built this mansion.
It's a fact; Cape Cod is one of the most visited summer locations within the United States. The town's exceptionally relaxing and calm atmosphere attracts visitors throughout the year. Even when you check in at any of the local area hotels Brewster starts to relax you in a way only a small town retreat can.
One of the most visited attractions in the town and on the cape is Nickerson Park. With its close to 2,000 acres, scrub pines and sandy soil surrounded by a vast amount of kettle ponds also known as kettle holes, the park offers visitors the opportunity to do just about any outdoor activity. There are beaches, fishing, camping, hiking, bike trails, canoeing and a great wealth of other activities. The state agency, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, manages and maintains the park extremely well. If you want to have a great outdoor experience with camping and fun, this park is the perfect place to go.
Brewster is known for several great reasons, especially the many associations it has had throughout the years. Helen Keller, an American lecturer, author and political activist who was the very first deaf and blind person to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree, visited Brewster. The song, "Alone in Brewster Bay" by Minnie Riperton was about her vacation stay on the cape during the early seventies, before the release of "Lovin' You", her hit single in 1975. The town, although small, is big in many ways.
The best time to visit Brewster is during the summer when the weather is just right and the ocean breeze is the perfect complement to the warm sun. In fact, the area is famous worldwide for its superb children's summer camp, which offers many different types of water sports and sailing.
